A lesson in Cyber Security and Information and Communications Technology

In 2023, the Saras Group’s initiatives aimed at students were enriched with new content in line with the latest requirements of the business world: with this in mind, students of the Enrico Fermi High School for Technical and Business Education and Surveyors in Thiesi and Don Gavino Pes High School in Tempio took part in the PCTO project “Cyber Security and Information and Communications Technology”.

The aim of spreading knowledge to enhance intellectual capital was developed by focusing on topical issues towards which the students showed interest and motivation.
In addition, the opportunity to see the production plants in person was particularly satisfying for the young learners, so that they could supplement the theoretical skills learned in their courses.

Topics and activities

The Group is a pioneer in the digitisation of processes, which aims at increasing the degree of reliability and development of processes.

The 15-hour PCTO “Cyber Security and Information and Communications Technology” took place in the classroom and included a visit to the Sarlux refinery, and involved approximately 50 students in their final year.

The Soft Skill and Orientation Paths (PCTOs) are designed to bring schools and the business system closer together through guidance, assistance and facilitation, creating more specific training experiences than those offered in school and providing students with the opportunity to acquire specific knowledge about the world of work.

The Group’s ICT team described real experiences in Information Technology and Digital Security, complementing the students’ education.

ICT Management and Cyber Security

ICT Management connects all Group companies and premises to systems hosted both in the cloud and in its data centre, develops and manages application solutions for business needs by designing and dimensioning architectures and infrastructures, and supports the hybrid work environment with workplace management.

Production processes, plant, shipping and maintenance management, and environmental monitoring are also optimised through the development of RPA (Robotic Process Automation) and, through cloud computing, are even shared interactively on the tablets used by the technicians working in the plants.

The Group’s Cyber Security team has introduced technologies to protect remote access to the company network, services in the cloud, portals on the Internet and administrative access. In addition to the protection of servers and computers, Saras has also extended these guarantees to smartphones and tablets.

In the context of the prevention and protection of its ICT and industrial control systems, which are strategic in safeguarding the business, the company has set up a specialised operational service, consisting of the Security Operation Centre (SOC), operating on a 24-hour basis to protect the company’s data.

Comments from the students

I found that the company had a very welcoming environment. I had no problems in following the training course offered to us and that allowed us to put what we had learned in the classroom into practice. Having lunch in the company canteen was also a great experience.
Alessandro

During the visit to Saras, I gained a better understanding of what I had studied at school on the structural and management aspects of industrial companies.
Ilaria

I think the visit to Sarlux was very useful to understand the importance of teamwork to conduct communication activities with reference to different contexts.
Giusy

Very interesting activity, although it only lasted one morning. I certainly realised the importance of using information correctly in order to manage the company correctly and guide its choices.
Andrea

The part dedicated to the goals and tools of Cyber Security and the explanation of how the company tries to minimise its systems’ vulnerability was very interesting.
Jacopo

We believe that technological innovation is one of the most important strategic levers to continue to play a leading role in the country’s energy industry and remain competitive in the international market.

The Saras Group is one of the main European oil refining operators, and is also active in the electricity generation sector. Directly and through its subsidiaries, the Group sells and distributes petroleum products on national and international markets. In addition, the Group produces and sells electricity through its subsidiaries Sarlux Srl (IGCC plant) and Sardeolica Srl (wind farm). The Group also supplies industrial engineering and research services to the oil, energy and environmental sectors through its subsidiary Sartec Srl.
