At Sarroch air quality standards are respected
At Sarroch air quality standards are fully respected, as confirmed by the independent study “Sarroch Project – the Environment and Health” conducted by the epidemiologist of the University of Florence, Annibale Biggeri. Updating of the “Drias” studio reveals: no higher-than normal incidence of respiratory diseases in children in south-eastern Sardinia. Heavy metal levels are also in the norm.
On 27 January, in Sarroch’s municipal library, during a public meeting, a pool of researchers presented monitoring figures for the period 2014-2015, ten years from inception of the project sponsored by the Ministry of Health and the Municipality of Sarroch. Data collected by the mobile lab of the municipality confirmed the results of other independent studies, such as the Report on Air Quality published by Arpas (the Regional Environmental Protection Agency) in July of each year, and the readings from the Saras monitoring stations. “No exceeding of threshold limits for sulphur dioxide, PM10 and benzene”, explained the researchers of the Tuscan University to the audience, referring to improvement of air quality standards round the industrial area. Also in reference to a bothersome agent such as hydrogen sulphide (responsible for the unpleasant smell at times perceived by citizens) it was confirmed that parameters established by the WHO are respected, and they are usually more stringent than national legal limits. The only negative note: in 2015, the odour detection threshold was exceeded for a total of 94 hours. To combat bad smells, Sarlux has already started to cover the Api tanks (where water and oil are separated during the treatment of waste water), which is responsible for most of the so-called ‘diffuse emissions’. For the Saras Group, the improvement in air quality recorded by the Sarroch Environment & Health monitoring project confirms the efforts made by workers and the constant investment made by the Company to make this industrial site increasingly environmentally friendly.
