A catchment basin for worker retraining and new employment, an Observatory to monitor local labour trends, industrial relations focused on dialogue and negotiation to avoid conflicts which would damage both workers and employers. These are just some of the pillars of the Pact for Employment in the Sarroch industrial area, signed by the Industrialists’ association of Southern Sardinia and Trade Unions Cgil, Cisl and Uil. The purpose of the agreement is to promote the development of the economy revolving around the Sarlux plants, by means of a set of rules shared by trade unions, contractors and the client company, to establish positive results in seven key areas. Parties to the agreement seek to make improvements in industrial relations, employment policies, internationalisation, increased efficiency, organizational innovation between client company and contractors and new economic development processes. Amongst the most innovative points is the identification of procedures to ‘cool down’ potential conflict situations, to be set in motion before any unilateral action is taken. Another key area addressed is safety: the Pact foresees meetings of the Coordinating body made up of the H&S managers of the client company and contractors, to discuss and share good practices; greater availability of the Sarlux clinical centre to contractor personnel for health tests and health monitoring; and pilot projects to increase safety levels.

The Pact also contains an invitation addressed to the Institutions of the territory, such as the University and Advanced training bodies, to create higher training courses. “In view of the fact that the industrial area of Sarroch represents an important pole for the economy of Sardinia, also thanks to a programme of ongoing investment – states the joint press release – Confindustria and the Trade Unions intend to boost the vocational available locally by means of monitoring and training initiatives, to connect the pool of local human resources with industrial maintenance and investment plans”.
