SARAS and AIDIC, a high-value partnership

In its 60 years of operations, Saras has become a cutting-edge group, in which international reach is coupled with solid local roots.

The company’s strong relationship with the territory and its actions aimed at continuous improvement, attention to the evolution of technological innovations that have turned into industry best practices, the development of digital knowledge and engineering skills with high professional standards, have generated economic benefits, employment, and significant professional skills.

A substantial role in this development was played by the network built up over the years between the Saras Group, the University, local companies and associations: together we create long-term value.

Saras is the most important industrial site in Sardinia thanks to the territory that hosts us and has always supported us by providing qualified people.

In support of the cultural development of the industrial sector, together with the University of Cagliari, an institution with which the Group has had a Memorandum of Understanding in place for 20 years, the AIDIC (Italian Association of Chemical Engineering) is one of the partners most committed to fostering the development of skills and encouraging young graduates to stay in Sardinia. The Saras Group has also long contributed to this initiative, including through incentives for completing their Master’s degree in Cagliari.

During 2022, with the resumption of activities after the pandemic, Saras took part in AIDIC’s and ATI’s (Italian Thermotechnical Association) cultural and scientific events and initiatives with speeches and contributions by the Group’s and the Sarlux refinery’s managers
aimed at disseminating technological knowledge, process innovation and sustainable development.
PEOPLE AS HERITAGE

As part of the AIDIC University Talks”, AIDIC organised a talk in Cagliari aimed at Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students studying Chemical Engineering.

For the Saras Group, an engineer from the Project Masterplanning & Appraisal team gave a talk about her own career path, demonstrating how in-depth knowledge, skills and professional standards form the basis of a performance that, combined with the innovation of processes throughout the supply chain, makes Saras a leader in the refining sector.

DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION

In June, the University of Cagliari hosted a study conference – organised by AIDIC and ATI – entitled The role of hydrogen in the energy transition in Sardinia”, in which the state-of-the-art initiatives underway in Sardinia on the use of hydrogen, strategic for the energy transition, were presented.

During the conference, the technological aspects and territorial impact of the recent agreement between Saras and Enel Green Power on the production of hydrogen at the Sarlux plant in Sarroch were set out. Also in this case, Saras uses sophisticated technologies, innovative techniques, efficient processes and up-to-date know-how/skills to operate sustainably.

TECHNOLOGY

AIDIC and ATI also organised the “Webinar Fil Rouge” for 2022: several short events, held exclusively online, in which various experts, chosen by the joint AIDIC/ATI committee, present their experiences and/or research on current topics of scientific interest.

The webinar on 23 June, entitled Digital evolution of industrial assets and their management: smart digital reality”,demonstrated how the application of advanced technologies enables the SARAS Group to maximise its refining performance while ensuring sustainability and respect for the environment.

The topics for 2022 have been chosen in view of and in preparation for the E2DT (Energy, Environment and Digital Transition) event, the international scientific conference on the energy and environmental transition and on digitisation, organised by AIDIC under the aegis of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering, to be held in Milan from 23 to 26 October.

It is thanks to the professionalism of our people that we have become a recognised leader in the sector. We use control systems and artificial intelligence systems that are truly world class.
