Saras buys the world’s first certified carbon neutral oil

Saras, true to its role as an innovative, sustainable Group and a leading energy supplier, has purchased the world’s first oil certified as carbon neutral.

We are very proud to be one of the first refining companies to seize this innovative opportunity. The purchase of certified carbon-neutral crude oil from the Swedish group Lundin confirms our Group’s ongoing and growing attention to the environmental sustainability of its activities and goes hand in hand with several other projects we have implemented to support our low-carbon strategy.

Specifically, at this stage, many of our efforts are aimed at reducing and offsetting the refinery’s direct carbon footprint with a range of projects: increasing biofuel production, energy efficiency initiatives, developing renewable energy production and green hydrogen.

Dario Scaffardi, – CEO and General Manager of Saras

The 600,000 barrels of crude oil extracted from Lundin Energy’s Edvard Grieg deposit off the coast of Norway and purchased by Saras have been certified to be carbon neutral by an independent specialist company, Intertek, which took into account the emissions of the entire product cycle, from extraction to delivery. The Swedish Group explains that the residual CO2 emissions were offset through a carbon dioxide capturing process based on natural solutions, certified under the Verified Carbon Standard by the independent company Intertek.

The Saras Group thus confirms its values of attention to safety, respect for the environment and the creation of sustainable value.

The Saras Group is one of the main European oil refining operators, and is also active in the electricity generation sector. Directly and through its subsidiaries, the Group sells and distributes petroleum products on national and international markets. In addition, the Group produces and sells electricity through its subsidiaries Sarlux Srl (IGCC plant) and Sardeolica Srl (wind farm). The Group also supplies industrial engineering and research services to the oil, energy and environmental sectors through its subsidiary Sartec Srl.
