Seven of the 25 newly appointed ‘Maestri del Lavoro’ are former Saras workers. They received the Star of Merit from Prefect Giuliana Perrotta during the Labour Day ceremony held on 1 May at the Vice Royal Palace in Cagliari. This distinction is awarded to those who showed ‘singular merits in terms of professional expertise, dedication and sound moral conduct’. The award ceremony was held in the beautiful Council Hall of the historic building at Piazza Palazzo, in the Castello quarter, on the evening of 1 May, in the presence of the families of the workers, coming from the whole of Sardinia.

In addition to the seven former Saras and Sarlux employees, who were recognised for the deep commitment shown throughout their working life, the other ‘Maestri’ came mostly from the Fratelli Pinna cheese factory (Thiesi – Sassari) and from the Banco di Sardegna or the former Banca di Sassari, two of Sardinia’s most important banks. The ceremony was filled with emotion for the wives, children and friends of the awardees, who received the star – bestowed by the President of the Republic on the proposal of the Minister for Labour – from the Prefect and the other regional authorities.
