The “Saras for Sport” prize went to the sports club Veloclub: it was handed over during a ceremony held on 14 December by players of the Cagliari FC, Roberto Colombo and Simone Padoin. A crowd of young athletes and supporters were there to greet the two players who were accompanied by the coach of the Cagliari junior team, Mario Beretta, and the head of the Football Academy, Oscar Erriu. Saras is closely linked to the Cagliari FA since it is its chief sponsor.
Veloclub was chosen because of the commitment of its members and the results obtained at various levels. It numbers no less than two champions: little Gabriele was awarded the Italian gold medal in category G4, while at regional level the association obtained the title in 11-12 year girls’ category. Its players received a memorial plaque together with a cheque for € 2,000 to be spent on sports equipment, offered by Saras.

Apart from providing economic support, the ‘Saras for Sport’ prize also seeks to encourage those who use sport to foster among young people values such as healthy competition, dedication and commitment to the achievement of important goals. Star testimonials were the two players of the Cagliari FC, to which Saras is closely linked as the main sponsor of the Football Academy dedicated to training tomorrow’s champions.

Saras per lo sport

“Sports clubs provide are nurseries for the growth of young athletes, nurturing their budding potential”, said Colombo, while Padoin thanked the Sarroch community and Saras for the invitation. To the audience of young and adult sports enthusiasts, Mario Beretta and Oscar Erriu (officials of the Cagliari junior team) explained their point of view, which comes from years of experience in the field: “In sport – said Beretta – sometimes you win, at others you learn: defeat just doesn’t exist”. For Francesco Marini and Vincenzo Greco (President and CEO of Sarlux, a Saras Group company), the refinery itself is just like a “great team, consisting of the industrial site and all the surrounding territory”. During the welcome speeches, Mayor Salvatore Mattana and Mirko Spiga, head of the sports department of the Municipality of Sarroch, stressed the importance of volunteers in sports clubs and the role of companies in supporting projects for the community. The prize-giving ceremony was also attended by the President of the Saras CRAL (workers’ leisure time club), Antonio Durzu, who, together with Saras, the Municipality of Sarroch and the Veloclub, contributed to organization of the ‘Festival of Sport’.
